Transforming your space into a cosy home (both interior and exterior) on an affordable budget is not all that hard, even if you’re unsure of what you want. Today, it is as easy as logging online and searching for images to help inspire or at least get ideas. In fact, some of the ideas suggested in this article include incorporating what you already have at hand.
Let’s look at some areas that you can work on at little to no cost.
LIGHTING
One of the most effective tools to transform your space into a cosy home is lighting. Think about any space, whether on a screen or in real life, that you’ve come across and whose ambience gave you that Nancy Meyers aesthetic that left you wanting to fall in love. Whether you realised it or not, the lighting played a significant role. So, here are a few ways to play around with the lighting in your space to achieve this.
Lamps
In place of the big, harsh overhead light fixture on your ceiling, perhaps switch it out for table lamps and floor lamps spread in your main space. These two options provide a warm, controlled lighting source and give off an aura of intimacy. And this doesn’t have to be a permanent transition; it can be utilised on those days/nights when you want to wind down with a hot cup of cocoa or a glass of wine.

Fairy Lights
It’s in the name, really. I mean, who doesn’t want something depicting a fairy tale inside their home? This invention has greatly enhanced the process of promoting aesthetics in our living quarters. Gone are the days when you had to wait until Christmas to display this magical theme in your house; it can be an everyday feeling now. A move as simple as draping string lights over the curtain rod, the standalone mirror in the corner, or even the bookshelf significantly enhances a space’s whimsical feel. Not to mention, they are quite affordable.

Candles
Let’s not sleep on these babies now. They have survived these many centuries because of their ability to adapt and be useful in each. Today, we have scented candles that not only provide flickering light but also diffuse the air so that you can kill two birds with one stone. Spread them out in your space, of course, whilst taking care not to start a fire and share that meal or drink with your loved one(s).

Warm bulbs
If, for some reason, all else fails or is simply unavailable, you can always come back to the trusted light bulb, only this time opt for the warm, yellow-toned ones. You’d be surprised (pleasantly, mind you) how much of a difference this simple change will make.

COLOURS, LAYERS AND TEXTURE
Another area to look at is the use of colours, layers and texture to give your home that oomph! To make it yours. Mix it up when it comes to the colours and the textures, too much of the same thing is boring, right? I always remember watching Friends and noticing the throw blanket draped over the couch in Monica’s meticulous apartment. It was the first time I had ever seen that, and that gesture evoked something in me, so much so that I made a mental note to do it when I was old enough to have my own space. Needless to say, today I always have a warm throw blanket on my sofa.
Apart from the blanket, you can spread out some throw pillows, lay down a warm, inviting rug or get a variety of cushion covers to switch up your theme without having to get new pillows.

If you’re a nature lover, another proven way to accentuate and promote that cosy feel is to get houseplants. These may come in the form of a potted tree in the corner, hanging planters or smaller pots on your coffee table, window sill and bookshelves. Not only do these natural elements elevate your style at little to no cost, but they also clean the air within your four walls and add colour to your space.

DECLUTTER AND ORGANIZE
I don’t mean to sound like a groupie here, but Monica Geller really instilled in me the importance of keeping a clean and organised space. I may not be as extreme, but I did take a lesson or two. The rules are clear: if you no longer use something in your house, give it away, sell it or throw it away. Creating that affordable cosy home on a budget sometimes just involves reigning in what you already have.
An alternative and effective way to get rid of leftover clutter that doesn’t seem to have a place in your house is to store it away in bins, baskets or plastic boxes. These can then be stored out of sight or appealingly incorporated into the decor. Not only does this exercise free up your house, but it also frees up your mind.

MAKE IT YOUR SPACE
Your home should reflect who you are, so it only makes sense for you to display items that are meaningful to you around the house. Pick a wall and mount family photos, kids’ artwork or even letters from loved ones (frame them first). Get online and learn some DIY ways of making them look aesthetic if necessary. There are always creative ways of incorporating heartfelt momentos into your everyday life, and if you can’t find them online, be the first to do it
Take it milestone by milestone. You don’t have to do it all at once. Figure out how you want to approach it. It could be room by room, month after month. We’re not trying to break the bank, afterall. Compare prices and sleep on some of the ideas before executing them.
