If you love, or at least like, walking into your kitchen and whipping up some meals every other day, then the kitchen is a very intimate and instrumental space in your day-to-day routine.
And not only does it need to be aesthetically pleasing, but it also has to be functional. Ideally, it should be a space that allows you to complete your cooking in the shortest time possible with the least friction to produce nutritious and delicious meals. So here are ten simple storage solutions for your small kitchen space.
1. Hang the pans, pots and cups
Transfer anything that doesn’t need to occupy precious counter-top or cupboard space onto hanging racks. Identify a suitable spot in your kitchen that isn’t too low-hanging, attach the hanging racks and place these items out of everyone’s way to avoid accidents.
You can get a hanging rack from any online marketplace, just ensure it’s of good quality.

2. Streamline your processes
Arrange items that perform the same functions close together to save on the footwork. For example, make sure the spice rack is within arm’s reach of the cooking stove, and place your dishes near the counter space to easily access them when plating your meals. Depending on what is most frequently used in your kitchen, keep those items on your countertops (if you have any).

3. Declutter and organize
Another kitchen organisation idea for your small kitchen space is literally free of charge. Now, as a renter with a small kitchen myself, this is my go-to and not just in the kitchen but in every room in my house. Part of the decluttering involves getting rid of duplicate items. Not every new and shiny invention requires space in your kitchen. Retain one tool/gadget for each function and get rid of the rest to create some much-needed space. The kitchen is the one room where you cannot afford accidents, so please take care to make it accessible and clear.
4. Install some floating shelves
If you have a bare wall, you can install floating shelves on it to accommodate some of your items. Thankfully, this falls under the DIY list since you can easily put them up yourself. In addition, you can add hooks to the bottom shelf of the floating shelves to hang frequently used mugs and such.
5. Put up high-reaching cabinets
Make use of the space above and get a handyman to install some high-reaching cabinets where you can stash your least-used items. Don’t let any of that prime real estate on your walls go to waste, I’m telling you.
6. Organise your pantry with baskets and jars
Use wicker baskets or see-through storage containers to arrange your pantry in an orderly fashion. Incorporate jars and labels as well, because at the end of the day, we still want the kitchen to be aesthetically pleasing. And of course, this makes cleaning out the pantry easier.

7. Maximise your drawers
Don’t just throw cutlery and other random items into your drawers in an effort to get them out of sight; streamline them by placing them in organisers. This allows for structure and efficiency even when picking out what you need in an orderly and timely fashion.

8. Pan/cooking pot organiser
If, for some reason, you can’t hang the pots and pans, you can efficiently store them on a vertical organiser. By stacking them upwards, you only use a small surface area.
9. Use a storage rack
Still on maximising surface area, employ the use of a multi-purpose storage rack with or without wheels. These racks can be wooden or steel, pick your fancy. The sturdier the better, and if you can find one with wheels, that’s also an option.
10. Make use of modern-day storage inventions
I’ve put this as the last point because this article couldn’t possibly cover every idea or tactic. And I bet that if you log onto your online shopping app and type in ‘Kitchen Organisation’, you’ll find at least ONE item that would serve a pressing need in your kitchen. The beauty of today’s world is that efficiency-promoting gadgets are being invented every other day. I’ll go one step further and challenge you to invent one if you don’t find what you need in the market.
There are more answers to your storage solutions, so do not suffer in silence. Walk into your local store and figure out what can help you; the answers are there.
